Free Wifi in Thar, what an idea!

Yet another brilliant idea by the government.

Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) is providing free WiFi to two cities near their project in Thar. Yes. You read that write. WiFi in Thar. Wireless Internet in Tharparkar. Isn’t that Cool?

Many Pakistanis have showed their hostility on social media towards this great initiative. They believe that the people of Thar are in a dire need of ‘important things’ like clean water, food, medicines and schools. But I think, these people are unaware of the power of the internet. Internet can do wonders for anyone. It just has to be used properly.

It is a fact that everyone in Thar owns a laptop or at least a smartphone to access Internet. A survey conducted by SECMC showed that the iPhone is the most used phone in the area. The only thing they lacked was a WiFi connection and now, courtesy of SECMC, they have got that as well. Haters claim that people of Thar need clean water for drinking, but they have forgotten that there are a number of online stores which can deliver such resources. The residents of Thar are only a click away from getting clean water delivered to their houses. No. I am not being naïve. I understand this will cost them more money. They can also call an Uber and get to the nearest water source in minutes instead of walking many miles just to fetch water. Uber, as we know, will be cheaper.

There is no stopping the advancements in technology. Someday, the people of Thar might also be able to directly download water and food onto their laptops through plug and play taps manufactured by Microsoft.  Anything is possible.

Pessimists on social media are also claiming that Thar needs more schools. Let me ask you this, why build schools when you can just open YouTube on your sleek smartphone and learn new things. They can also download reading material and read it on their IPads. According to Alif Ailaan, the literacy rate in Thar is just 17% and through SECMC’s initiative this figure will reach at least 90% if not a perfect 100%. Do you still think this is an unimportant and ridiculous move?

Probably the best thing about the launch of free WiFi in Thar is that the people of Thar can now view all the brilliant and inspiring speeches of Bilawal Bhutto anytime they want. Not only that, but they can also download these speeches onto their laptops and watch it in 4K resolution.  If that’s not amazing, I don’t know what is. Also, the people of Thar can now play Clash of Titans with their friends and family. They have already started using Facebook and Twitter. One recent post on Facebook read:

“Having moldy bread and stinking water for lunch.” – Feeling Blessed

People were of the opinion that the Sindh government was doing nothing to solve the issue in Thar, but they have been rightly proved wrong. This is certainly a success for the residents of Thar and everyone who made this possible.  It was about time that we did something to better the conditions in Thar and we did just that. Hopefully, Sindh government will play its part and encourage the launch of free WiFi in other parts of Thar as well. In addition to their past fruitful efforts, the Sindh government can distribute credit cards in Thar. This will make online shopping much more convenient. Not only that, but more people will now retweet Bilawal and Bakhtawar’s tweets. It’s a win-win situation for everyone. Maybe, if they put in a little more effort, they can also provide free Netflix in Thar. The new season of Narcos will be out soon and we don’t want our friends from Thar to miss any of it.
